Events

Did you know that February is actually one of the busiest months of the whole year? Even though it is the shortest month, it is packed with really important holidays and events.

First, February is Black History Month. This is a special time when we look back at all the amazing things African Americans have done for our country. You have probably learned about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in school. He was an incredibly brave leader who spent his entire life fighting for civil rights and making sure everyone is treated fairly, no matter what they look like. He is famous for his “I Have a Dream” speech, which people still talk about today because it is so powerful. Sadly, he was assassinated by a racist man in April 1968, but his message of kindness and equality still lives on in all of us.

Another really important event happening right now is Ramadan. This is a month-long holiday celebrated by people who are Muslim. This year, it starts in February and goes through part of March! During Ramadan, people focus on being the best version of themselves and thinking about others.

One of the most interesting parts is fasting. People who celebrate don’t eat or drink anything from the moment the sun comes up until the sun goes down! They wake up very early for a meal called Suhoor, and then they have a big dinner with their families called Iftar once it gets dark. The good news for kids is that if you are still young, you don’t have to fast yet. It’s a time for family, prayer, and helping people who are in need.

Last but not least, we can’t forget Valentine’s Day on February 14th! This holiday is all about friendship and love. A lot of people celebrate by going to fun school dances, having fancy dinners, or giving out those little paper cards with candy hearts attached. While it’s a great day to tell your friends and family how much you care about them, my teacher always says you can show kindness and love any day of the year—not just when there are chocolates involved!

There are so many different ways to celebrate this month. Whether you are learning about history, fasting with your family, or making heart-shaped cards, there is something for everyone. How many of these do you celebrate?
