Have you ever thought about knitting and how there is a lot of history? Knitting has a very long and amazing history that started from Europe. The earliest knitted artifacts are Egyptian socks. Gradually it became used and practiced by people from all around the world and it was passed down from generation to generation. Before knitting, there was a needle work technique known as Nalbinding. Nalbinding creates a fabric similar to knitting by looping and knotting yarn with a single needle. Therefore Knitting is the process of using two or more needles to pull and loop yarn into a series of interconnected loops in order to create a finished garment or fabric. The word “knitting” comes from the Old English word “cnyttan” meaning “to tie with a knot”.

  1. Beyond making cozy items, Knitting is used as a therapeutic activity and knitting has significant mental health benefits.
  2. When there were wars, knitting became a national duty, with women creating vital supplies, and knitted patterns were even used for coded messages by resistance fighters.
  3. The fastest knitters have set records for speed (118 stitches per minute), even marathon knitting, like running a marathon while knitting a 12-foot scarf.
