Democracy

American politics might seem like a big, complicated idea, but at its core, it is very simple and easy to understand. It simply is just a group project where a bunch of people pitch in—and the people, aka citizens, can vote. The big goal is to set rules so that people born in or living in that country can stay safe from dangerous individuals. They also try to do what is best for everyone in the country.

In the US, there are three government branches called the executive branch, the legislative branch, and the judicial branch. Each one is no more important than the other branches. All of these branches play a crucial role in helping the country. Congress, the legislative branch, writes the laws. The executive branch, led by the president, makes sure those laws are actually put into effect. The judicial branch, which includes the Supreme Court, interprets the laws and makes sure they are applied fairly to everyone, even the president.

The United States has a system called democracy. This means people can vote for anyone they want as the leader for whatever position they want to vote for. Big and major elections, like choosing the president, happen every 4 years. In the 2024 elections between Donald Trump and Kamala Harris, Donald Trump won and is currently the president of America. The system of the government was written a long time ago when they were writing the Constitution.

Political parties are also an extremely important part of American politics. A political party is a group of people who share similar ideas about how the government should work. The two main parties in the United States are the Democratic Party and the Republican Party. They sometimes have different opinions about education, taxes, and healthcare.

Even though kids can’t vote until they are 18, they are still part of the country and can learn about politics (kid-friendly, though). Understanding how the government works helps people make good decisions as they grow up. It also helps them become active citizens caring for the country they live in.

In the end, American politics is all about people working together, sometimes disagreeing, but always trying to make the country a better place.
