Spain is the second most mountainous country in Europe after Switzerland. The country also boasts more than 8,000 kilometers (about 4,970 miles) of sunny beaches. Also, Sagrada familia is an unfinished basilica in Barcelona and has been under construction since 1882.

For languages, Castilian Spanish is primary, Catalan, Galician, and Basque are also official regional languages. Basque is an ancient language isolate with no known relatives. Spain also has one of the highest numbers of bars and restaurants per capita globally. Madrid is home to Sobrino de Botín ( the oldest restaurant) which has operated continuously since 1725.

Spain’s history is a fascinating story of different cultures mixing together over thousands of years. Long ago, the Romans ruled the land and built great roads and bridges, followed by the Visigoths and then Muslim rulers called Moors, who introduced beautiful architecture, science, and new foods. In 1492, Christian kingdoms united Spain, and Christopher Columbus’s voyage helped the country build a massive global empire filled with riches. After centuries of global power, Spain also faced difficult times, including a major civil war in the 1930s and decades under a bad man named Francisco Franco. Today, Spain is a peaceful, modern democracy and a proud member of the European Union, famous worldwide for its rich traditions, art, and vibrant culture. Some places to visit in Barcelona are the breathtaking and unfinished Basilica of the Sagrada Familia, admire the colorful mosaic sculptures at Park Güell, and wander through the medieval alleyways of the Gothic Quarter. You can also stroll down the lively La Rambla boulevard to sample local treats at La Boqueria market, and finish your day relaxing by the water at Barceloneta Beach.
